My candidate would
definitely be Leonardo DiCaprio. He is a film producer, actor, and
environmentalist. He achieved international fame with James Cameron’s Titanic.
He also played in many other movies, including Romeo + Juliet, Catch Me If You
Can, Shutter Island, Inception, Django Unchained, The Great Gatsby, The Wolf of
Wall Street, and The Revenant. He won many awards, unfortunately not including
an Oscar. Despite being tortured about this subject, he stays silent and humble,
works harder and plays better. I have to admit that I have fallen in love with
him in Titanic a bit. He gives himself to his role. There is a popular story on
the internet, about his role in Django. In the scene where he cracks a glass in
his hand, it was actually unplanned. He just kept his role. Even because of
this, he deserves all the awards that he wants. I also check his Instagram a
lot, and he usually tries to give his followers information about environmental
issues, which I find very noble. This year, I think because of his last
successful movie, The Revenant, and his years of being royal about the Oscar
Issue, he deserves to be the man of the year.

Reflection Task 2B - The Simpsons
I would like to
write about The Simpsons. The Simpsons is an American sitcom created by Matt
Groening. Matt Groening tries to narrate the middle class American lifestyle in
a satirical way. The series is mainly about The Simpsons family, which includes
Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. I think the family is created in a genius
way. Almost nothing is coincident. For example, Bart derives from the word ‘Brat’.
He is also actually Matt Groening himself (he identifies himself with him, and
the family with his family). The other members’ name is Matt’s family members’
name. Marge’s mother’s name is Jacqueline Bouvier, which is a reference to John
Kennedy’s wife. In the series, the producers always make references. That’s one
of the main things I like about The Simpsons. Another thing is, somehow they
reflect the family life in a very realistic way for an animated show. It is
amazing how a show can be watched by a child, an adult, and an elder with the
same pleasure. There are messages and things to learn for everyone. Another
interesting thing about the series is, actually the characters were going to be
more detailed and professional. Though, by a mistake, they aired the first
drafts of the characters. Then, Matt Groening wanted it to stay like that. I
find this so cool. It is the longest-running American animated program. There
is also The Simpsons movie, which is related to the series. It affected
numerous people, program, producer, and even the language. Homer's exclamatory catchphrase ‘D'oh!’ has been adopted into the English language. The
Simpsons has a vast spectrum of secondary and tertiary characters, which I find
very successful, and appreciate. In the series the time floats, but the
characters do not age. Bart refers to that in an episode, by answering a
question ’(for) 24 years’ (despite he is a child). There are games, pillows,
cups, toys, t-shirts based on this show. Despite all these facts, some people
criticise the show and doesn’t find it successful. I disagree with them. Also,
you have to see that Homer works in a nuclear factory, so the producers can use
environment as a topic easily. The children goes to the elementary school, and
there comes the educational topics. Marge is referring to most of the American
wifes. All in all, I really appreciate The Simpsons.
Reflection Task 2A
I would like to write about Japan, and their culture. The
main reason for me to choose this subject is a video taken in Turkey. The
speaker asks random people the placement of Japan. They give tragically funny
answers. One of them was ‘in abroad’. Well, the answer could have been considered
as true, however, I think we have to know more about Japan. First of all, I
want to give some basic information about the country. Japan is an island
country in East Asia, located
in Pacific Ocean. The kanji
(Japanese writing system) that make up the country’s name actually mean ‘sun
origin’, and Japan is also called ‘Land of the Rising Sun’. I think it really
fits, because the country have risen from the ashes. Japan suffered a lot
because of the nuclear power (Little Boy, Fat Man, the Fukushima disaster).
Though, the country is still powerful. The national foundation day is 11 Feb.
660 BC. Such a rooted country, hence a rich culture. They are culturally very
hardworking. You know how language and culture is connected. They have a word
called ‘karoshi’, meaning ‘death from
overwork’. They like to think themselves close to nature, however, much of
urban Japan is an industrialised, build-up mess (the result of the
redevelopment after the war). They value outside appearances, presentation and
behaviours very much, but they also give importance to privacy and family.
Actually, I find them close to our culture in that manner (family). ‘Age’ is
truly important for them. In Japan, opposite to our culture, everyone is aware
of the other’s age. Their language has many words designed to address others in
regard to their age. We can say they have a social ranking based on this issue.
Some corporations even have some newspapers to inform others about worker’s
age. It may determine the position of your desk in the office, or how fast/in
which cup you will get your tea. They place great importance on group harmony.
And yes, they have had Geisha’s and Samurai’s… Their traditional woodblock
printing led to the creation of manga, a comic book format. The main thing I find
interesting about Japan is that they give more importance to the presentation
than reality in their cuisine, tea ceremony, daily life, business life… Sumo is
considered their national sport. Their martial arts (Judo, Karate) are also
widely practiced. They have religious freedom.
Reflection Task 1 - The Student Clubs
I would like to join the theatre club. The scene is the representation, the reflection of the reality. This sounds a bit cliché, but it is true. I think joining this group would be a nice opportunity for me to improve myself, and learn more about life. Also, maybe I can improve my frame of mind, my point of view and my imagination. Another point I want to mention is, you know what they say; Sometimes, in order to see better, you have to be in a distance. By acting, maybe I will understand my own self and my character better. In addition, in my opinion, it would entertain me. Wearing costumes, imitating people… How can it be boring? Additionally, it is a feasible way to adapt to the school and make some new friends. The last but not least, I might have a stage fright… It is an obstacle for me which I really need to get rid of. I think, by pushing myself to my limits, maybe I can get over it. It is worth to try, isn’t it ? Because of this reasons I have tried to explain, I think joining the theatre club would be salutary for me.

‘‘People are very reluctant to talk about their private
lives, but then you go to the Internet and they’re much more open.’’ - Paul Coelho
The writer, I think, tries to explain the irony many people
face every single day. You meet people, and you want to know them more. When
you ask them what you want to know about directly, it’s inappropriate. On the
other hand, you can just use the Internet for this. Do you want to know where they go? Look at Swarm. Do you wonder about their hobbies and if they have a
relationship or not? Check their Facebook account and relationship status.
Also, you can check their Instagram profile. Do you want to know about their
favourite music /religious ideas? Then you should definitely check out their
Soundcloud/Spotify/Fizy and Twitter accounts. And there you go, you know even
more than you needed, only via Internet. I definitely agree with the writer.
People should realise that anything they put on the net or apps stays there. If
you don’t want others to know about you, then don’t use the apps like your
personal diaries.
